Preston College launch state of the art Wireless Network.

By Anonymous

August 23, 2004 -- Preston and Cardinal Newman Colleges wanted to pool their resources to provide high-speed connectivity to the Local Community and College Outreach sites, such as village Halls, Drop-in Centres, Youth Centres and Adult Learning Centres.

The colleges were currently using 2Mbps-leased lines to connect some of their outreach centres that were proving to be a very high ongoing expense.

Preston College approached Teksys Educational Services looking for a more cost-effective alternative. Having worked closely with Wireless CNP, Teksys were aware of the benefits of suggesting a wireless solution.

Wireless CNP and Teksys proposed a solution using the Alvarion BreezeACCESS VL equipment transmitting in the 5.8GHz Band C frequency. Alvarion’s BreezeACCESS VL was specified due to a number of factors. Many of the Outreach centres are up to 15Km away from the Guild Centre, the proposed site for the Base Stations, so equipment that could achieve these distances was essential both with Clear Line of Sight and with Obstructed Line of Sight.

Preston College reached an agreement with the Preston Guild Centre and Orange to use the Orange Array on the roof of the Guild Centre to install the 3 Alvarion BreezeACCESS VL 120 antennas. A BreezeACCESS VL Base Station supported each antenna – this set up delivers a 360 coverage area across the Lancashire plain, with each base station capable of supporting up to 512 subscribers and 120Mbps maximum capacity.

As part of this agreement with the Guild Centre both Preston College and Cardinal Newman College are installing 10 Mb Fibre Lan Extension Services provided by Telewest to the Guild Centre roof to provide backbone connectivity to college LAN’s

The Alvarion BreezeACCESS VL system specified offers a carrier class service and is compliant with the UK interface regulation as stipulated by Ofcom for using the 5.8GHz band c frequency. The network was designed on a Point-to-Multipoint cellular architecture offering a high spectral efficiency and decreasing over all costs.

The Alvarion BreezeACCESS VL subscriber units consist of an Outdoor Unit with an integrated antenna and a wall or desk mountable indoor unit, these subscriber units are fully ruggedized and manufactured for outdoor use and can be installed in a number of hours, rather than days or weeks that is common with the installation of traditional wired alternatives. Due to the Non Line of Sight capabilities of the BreezeACCESS VL equipment, the subscriber units are ideal for temporary installation in outreach centres, for example when the college is hosting an off site course in a local village hall where connectivity is required for the duration of the course only. This added mobility of the VL solution specified by Wireless CNP and Teksys was an added benefit of the system and the future proofing of the Preston College network.

Preston College decided on the wireless solution, specified by Wireless CNP and Teksys, as it represented a one off capital expenditure that could be covered by a Local Government grant, unlike leased lines that incur and ongoing expense, for which no grants are available. Financially this project “will save approximately £30K per annum in telecommunications cost for Preston College alone and approximately £10K to Cardinal Newman” Director of Community Mike McCusker of Preston College was pleased to mention.

“The project brings together former competing education providers into collaboration - allowing the sharing of costs and resources. It will increase the viability of widening participation work in deprived communities and with community groups. It will develop the use of ILT in Adult and Continuing Learning work - working to support the three-year ILT strategy to provide JANET access to community outreach work in this area. It will allow short term activities in community venues that otherwise would have been unviable and allow providers to 'move on' when one training need has been satisfied to another area
It will allow the development of bandwidth intensive services to support e-learning, such as through the development of IP/TV and the use of Cisco content delivery engines .” continues Mike.

This network has helped integrate the Colleges with the local community sharing the connectivity to the mutual benefit of all residents of Preston and South Lancashire.

In addition Mike was pleased that this network “will contribute to the City Council’s plans to develop Preston as an ‘E-City’, paving the way for an extension of the network to meet the needs of the rural areas north of the city.”

NEW HOPE FOR COLLEGE GRADUATION IN FOUR YEARS

Tallahassee, FL October 09, 2003- A new website is dedicated to help students graduate from college in four years. The website is www.graduatefromcollege.com

“Graduating in four years can now be a reality with the proper planning,” says educator and motivational speaker Derrick Farmer.

Eight years ago, I started teaching high school in Polk, FL. It was a thrill to see the students I taught graduate from high school and enter college. After a few years, I saw those same prominent college students return home or dropout of college altogether.

I wanted to help so I began to research only to find out that college graduation was not just a problem for my students, but it was a problem for students’ nation wide. Statistics show that about half of the students who entered college graduated.

I furthered my research and investigated bookstores to see if help was available for students to graduate from college. To my dismay, most books in the bookstore focused on one thing and that was getting into college. There were books on How to get into College, How to Pass the ACT, How to Write College Entrance Essays, etc. Yet, I did not clearly identify one book that focused on getting OUT of college.

It is apparent these “how to books” work with the increase of college enrollment and high volume book sale. Yet, I wanted to help students get out of college not just get into one. I began my research, along with my personal college experiences, to help students graduate from college in four years. With over a year’s research and 50 thousand words later, I wrote my book, How to Graduate from College, “Ten Steps to Getting in and OUT of College in Four Years.”

Step #1 In order to graduate from college you must first be ready for college. Students should be aware that strong academic core classes in high school are the beginning for being prepared for college. Students should understand how to choose the right college along with the right major. Let’s not forget about admission qualifications, college testing, and financial aid. When applying to college, you should enter a college where you have the greatest likelihood of graduating.

Step #2 If you have not heard college is not free. As a matter of fact it is down right expensive. Students need to start early to seek money for college. With rising college tuition, I even suggest as early as the 7th grade. There will be other things you need money for besides college tuition such as long distance phone calls, laundry, personal needs, entertainment, etc. This will vary depending on your life style.

Step #3 Once students get accepted into college, they should get to know their college. There are people that will help you in college. They are your college advisors, get to know them well. Students should not be afraid to ask for help. Students are often lost on campus. Where to go? What to do? Who to ask for this or that? There are no parents to rescue you like high school. This can easily be solved by reading the college catalog and the student handbook. The student handbook is your survival guide on a college campus.

Step #4 Students must cater to the approach of each classroom college professor. It is he or she who gives the grade. All professors are not created equal. Fully understanding the professor’s evaluation could determine the grade you receive.

Step #5 Studying is essential to college graduation. It is essential that students develop effective study habits for college. Students should know how to apply appropriate planning, studying, and time management skills.

Step #6 Whether students live at home, in the dorm, or in an apartment, living arrangement could effect graduation. Besides being stressed in the classroom and the library, added stress can be contributed if proper living arrangements are not made. Several things should be considered such as choosing a roommate, living location, food, and living expenses.

Step #7 Colleges can be stressful and intense at times. This is why there is a need for proper rest and exercise. Our bodies perform based on how we treat it. Of you do not fuel it up with proper eating, exercise, and rest you could run out of gas.

Step #8 College has some dangers that you should be aware of. Some dangers are more severe than others. One danger is not choosing the appropriate major based on your capability. Many students choose major that for exceed their capabilities. Before choosing a major, research your major to see if you are capable of completing this major.

Step #9 When you are a senior in high school there should be a check list of items needed to be completed before you graduate from high school. The same goes from graduation from college. Many students extend their senior year of college by not taking care of obligation to their college.

Step 10 With so many things going on in college, students may lose vision of their purpose in college. Keep your eyes on the prize, you are in college to graduate. There may be times when college will appear to be unbearable, but do not give up until graduating.
