COLLEGE PREP FOR PARENTS: TOP FIVE THINGS TO SAY AS YOUR KIDS HEAD OUT TO COLLEGE

By Anonymous

ROCHESTER, NY August 20, 2003 -– Parents and students face critical issues during the transition from high school to college. The Next Step Magazine offers parents advice on what words of wisdom to share with their children as they head out the door to college in only a few short weeks.

1. Don’t be afraid to change your mind. The typical adult has several careers in a lifespan. It is impossible for young adults to know exactly what course they want to pursue first. Students often change their course of direction several times during their college careers.

“Don’t worry if you find yourself changing your mind as you discover new fields of study – use the first years of college to experience the wide range of occupational paths, and you’ll find yourself heading down the road to success soon enough on a path that suits you perfectly.”

2. Take time out to “experience” college, but remain focused.

“Take advantage of your role as a college student to tap into internship opportunities, study abroad programs, student groups and more. Many of the relationships you build during college will last a lifetime and will help with future job placements, advice, or to introduce you to new networks of professionals.”

3. Be aware of expenses but don’t worry about money.

“Education is worth every dime, even if you have to pay for it yourself. Lifetime earnings of college-educated adults far outstrip their uneducated counterparts. Don’t let student loans weigh on your mind – just work harder to ensure your financial success, or at least enough to repay the loans!”

4. You’re always welcome back. Unfortunately, more often than not, graduating college students today are not finding immediate employment.

“You are welcome back home any time, as long as you are actively pursuing career opportunities.”

5. Call when you can. The more pressure there is for you to call or come home on the weekends, the greater the chance you just won’t have the time. Be available to your children when they need you, and live your own life while they build their own.

“Give us call when you have a chance to talk.”
