By Anonymous The first students on two pioneering maritime degree courses at South Tyneside College, the UK’s National Nautical Centre for Excellence, have graduated with honours at a ceremony in Newcastle upon Tyne.
The BSc (Hons) in Marine Operations and the BEng (Hons) in Marine Engineering were developed to service a need for higher academic programmes in the global maritime industry. Lasting up to 18 months, the courses are run as joint project between the College and the University of Northumbria.
The Marine Operations degree is open to students holding Higher National Diploma in Nautical Science, an MCA Class 1 Deck Certificate of Competency or an equivalent qualification. Modules in the course include Shipping Management, Port Operations and Shipping Law, while related topics such as Human Resource Management, Marine Pollutions and Economics & Finance are also covered.
The Marine Engineering degree is open to holders of the Marine Engineering Class One Certificate of Competency or an HND in a related subject. The programme encompasses Naval Architecture, Applied Mathematics, Energy Conservation, Marine Control and a full range of other topics.
Kate Gillespie, course tutor on the Marine Operations course, said: “We developed these courses in response to the needs of the maritime industry. Both programmes give students an excellent range of skills, combined with the flexibility to explore a wide range of career options, at sea and on shore. It’s extremely satisfying to see the first intake graduating.”
Dr Chris May, head of the School of Maritime Studies & Engineering said: “These unique degree courses have both proved a great success. Both programmes provide qualifications that recognise and build on the valuable skills of Nautical Science and Marine Engineering personnel, often not acknowledged outside their core industries.
“This provides the further knowledge and expertise needed to fulfil a role in the management of shipping and marine engineering, or in the wider maritime industry. The College is always keen to develop new provision to meeting the training needs of the maritime industry at all levels.”
The third group of students on the degree programme will commence their study in September. Anyone who would like further information can contact South Tyneside College on (0191) 427 3900 or visit the website at www.stc.ac.uk.
